Client Profile

Our client is a well-established metal fabrication and heavy-equipment workshop based in Singapore. Their facility handles large welded steel structures, machinery frames and heavy parts that require outdoor spray painting, weather-protected assembly and covered storage. With a busy production schedule and valuable workpieces exposed to the elements, they needed a reliable, large-span overhead covering solution that could be opened and closed on demand.

The Challenge

Large workpieces (up to 20 m in length) could not be moved easily; a fixed roof would block crane access and natural light.

Singapore's frequent heavy rain and intense tropical sun made outdoor spraying and assembly inconsistent and weather-dependent.

The covering had to be elevated (clear height 10 m) to allow gantry cranes and tall equipment to pass underneath safely.

Manual opening/closing of a 20×20 m canopy would be slow and labour-intensive — an electric, motorised solution was essential.

Strong monsoon winds required anti-wind and anti-derailment protection for safe long-term outdoor use.

CoatTech Solution

CoatTech designed and manufactured a 20 m × 20 m wall-mounted electric retractable canopy with an elevated (overhead) structure. The canopy is fixed to the existing building wall at one side and supported by H-beam columns and a motor-driven telescopic roof that slides open and closed at the push of a button. When open, it gives the workshop full, unobstructed access for cranes and large parts; when closed, it provides complete weather protection for spraying, assembly and storage.

How It Works

Four (4) rows of horizontal telescopic frames extend the movable roof section smoothly to a full 20 m span.

Four (4) sets of 0.4 KW / 380V explosion-proof drive motors deliver 4-wheel drive, controlled via a controller and remote control.

The canopy runs on H-beam tracks with 3-inch H-type galvanized iron casters; internal track bearing brackets ensure stable, low-friction movement.

Anti-wind and anti-derailment plates (I-beam type) prevent the canopy from being lifted or jumping the track during storms.

Elevated Overhead Design — column height 8 m + canopy height 2 m gives a clear 10 m height, so cranes and tall equipment pass underneath with ease.

Electric Motor-Driven Retraction — 4× 0.4 KW / 380V explosion-proof motors, 4WD, remote control; one-button open/close saves time and labour.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Structure — main beam 50×50×2.0 mm, H-beam columns (250×125 / 200×100), frame spacing < 1.2 m for strength and long service life outdoors.

20 m Telescopic Roof — four rows of horizontal telescopic frames extend to 20 m; side sections extend 25 cm outward (total 20.5 m) for full coverage.

Weatherproof Fabric Curtain — side curtain fabric reaches the rails, sealing the workspace against rain, sun and wind.

Anti-Wind & Anti-Derailment System — 36 sets of I-beam anti-derailment plates keep the canopy secure and on-track in heavy weather.
