Latest company case about Case Study: Custom Overhead Conveyor Spray Booth for Heavy Electrical Transformer Coating

Project Overview

In heavy industrial manufacturing, surface treatment is a critical phase that directly impacts product longevity and operational reliability. This case study highlights a tailored engineering solution delivered by CoatTech: a high-efficiency, heavy-duty industrial spray coating booth customized for a leading electrical equipment manufacturer. The project involved designing an enclosure capable of handling high-mass, large-dimension transformer tanks while maintaining absolute environmental control and workflow continuity.

The Challenge: Heavy Material Handling & Precision Environmental ControlThe client faced two primary bottlenecks in their existing surface finishing production line:

Material Handling Constraints: The workpieces—corrugated transformer tanks and heavy-duty cooling radiators—weighed several tons. Transporting these massive components into a standard enclosed spray booth via manual carts caused severe workflow disruptions and safety risks. The client required a system that integrated seamlessly with their pre-existing overhead crane and hoist network.

Complex Geometry & Coating Uniformity: Transformer tanks feature dense, deep corrugated cooling fins. Ensuring an even, defect-free anti-corrosion liquid coating layer across these complex surfaces requires high-intensity, shadow-free illumination and highly controlled airflow to prevent overspray accumulation and paint runs.

Environmental Containment: Maintaining airtight sealing around an active overhead conveyor track is traditionally difficult, leading to air pressure loss or contaminant leakage.

The Solution: CoatTech's Custom Engineering Approach

CoatTech designed and manufactured a customized Heavy-Duty Industrial Coating Enclosure equipped with a specialized top-slit entry system.

1. Innovative Top-Split Slot Door Design
To solve the material handling challenge, CoatTech engineered a unique top-split door mechanism with a dedicated slot for the overhead conveyor chain. This allows the transformer tanks to remain suspended from the hoist throughout the entire transport, blast, paint, and cure sequence. When the doors close, heavy-duty flexible seals close tightly around the conveyor attachments, preserving the inner negative pressure and preventing dust infiltration.

2. High-Lux, Shadow-Free LED Lighting Grid
To ensure absolute precision when coating complex corrugated fins, the booth was equipped with an advanced ceiling-mounted LED lighting system. By deploying explosion-proof, high-color-rendering index (CRI) panels at calculated angles, the design eliminated shadows between the deep cooling fins, allowing operators to achieve uniform coating thickness.

3. Balanced Down-Draft Ventilation System
To manage overspray effectively, the system utilizes a high-volume down-draft airflow design. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and paint mist are pulled downward through multi-stage fiberglass and activated carbon filtration media, ensuring compliance with strict environmental emissions standards while maintaining a clean breathing zone for painters.

The Results & Operational Impact
The implementation of the CoatTech custom industrial coating booth yielded immediate improvements across the client's manufacturing

1.Workflow Efficiency: Eliminating floor-cart transfers reduced material handling cycle times by 42%.

2.Coating Quality: The combination of uniform down-draft airflow and high-lux lighting brought the coating rejection rate down to less than 0.5%.

3.Energy Savings: Optimized airflow controls and smart LED systems reduced overall operational energy expenditure by 25% compared to traditional setups.
