  01   THE INQUIRY

A rolling-stock plant upgrading under a national railway modernisation programme asked us to quote a washing, painting and drying chamber for freight wagons. On paper it read like a very large spray booth. In reality it was a power and takt-time puzzle.

Key requirement

Value in the specification

Internal clearance

30,000 × 6,000 × 6,000 mm, ≥1.0 m safety clearance to wagon

Throughput

≥7 wagon-sets per 12-hour shift  (takt ≤102 min)

Ventilation

Through-type, top-to-bottom, ≥0.20 m/s, ≥120 air changes/hour

Zone temperatures

Painting +18 ±2 °C  ·  Drying ≥+60 °C adjustable  ·  auto cooling mode

Air cleaning

Paint mist ≥75%  ·  Dust ≥95%  ·  VOC ≥90%, re-measured on site at SAT

Installed power

≤1,650 kW for the whole complex — verified at FAT and SAT

Operator access

≥4 mobile elevating platforms, up to 5,300 mm above railhead (1-T gauge)

Delivery & warranty

DAP site, ≤150 calendar days  ·  ≥24 months warranty, 48-h response

02   WHERE THE REAL PROBLEM WAS

Three numbers in the specification did not add up. We found them before quoting — not after signing.

01

Airflow vs. power ceiling

180 m² cross-section × 0.20 m/s = roughly 129,600 m³/h. Heating that volume of fresh air to 60 °C needs more than 2,100 kW. Fresh-air drying alone breaks the 1,650 kW limit.

02

Takt time vs. chamber length

12 h ÷ 7 wagons = 102 min per wagon, but wash → paint → dry run in series takes 200–250 min. A single 30 m bay holds one 4-axle wagon, so the three stages cannot overlap inside one shell.

03

VOC target vs. site measurement

Dry filtration + activated carbon clears the paint-mist and dust targets. But carbon saturates, and the spec demands VOC ≥90% measured on site at SAT — a factory pass is not a site pass.

  03   OUR ENGINEERING RESPONSE

The constraint

Our response

Result

1,650 kW ceiling vs. 129,600 m³/h

Zoned chamber with quick-opening partitions; drying runs on high-volume recirculation with 15–25% fresh-air make-up, plus heat recovery.

Peak modelled load ≈1,080 kW — about 34% margin below the cap.

102-min takt vs. 200–250 min cycle

Separate wash/paint bay and drying bay linked by the supplied traction winch, so drying overlaps washing and painting instead of queueing behind it.

Capacity path to ≥7 wagons/shift, subject to final site layout confirmation.

VOC ≥90% re-measured at SAT

Carbon concentration + catalytic oxidation (RCO); test method, sampling points and operating envelope written into the contract.

Compliance that is measurable and repeatable, not a promise on paper.

Access to sides and roof at 5.3 m

4 × in-house 3-axis mobile elevating platforms travelling the full 30 m, with emergency stop, guardrails and interlocks.

Full-coverage access from our own product line — no third-party sourcing.

04   POWER BUDGET AT A GLANCE

How we stayed inside 1,650 kW — nominal operating conditions, peak simultaneous load.
