Automated PU Coating Line for Automotive Components in High-Volume Production
Project Background
A leading automotive tier-1 supplier located in Monterrey, Mexico, required a major upgrade to their finishing department. Driven by the recent nearshoring boom and increased export demands to the United States, the client needed to transition from manual batch painting to a fully automated continuous production line for ABS and polycarbonate exterior vehicle components.
Engineering Challenges
The project presented three primary engineering constraints:
1.Footprint Limitation: The existing factory hall had a strict length restriction, making a traditional straight-line conveyor layout impossible.
2.High Throughput: The client required a production cycle time of fewer than 45 seconds per jig.
3.Strict Environmental Compliance: Due to North American export standards, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions had to be strictly controlled, necessitating advanced exhaust filtration.
Customized Solution
Our engineering team designed a highly compact, U-shaped automated finishing line to maximize the available floor space. The system integrated a heavy-duty Power and Free conveyor system to allow for variable speeds between the robotic spraying zones and the curing oven.
For the spraying environment, we deployed a custom down-draft dry filter paint booth featuring uniform 0.4 m/s airflow to prevent overspray turbulence. To handle the VOCs, a multi-stage dry filtration system was coupled with an Activated Carbon absorption tower, engineered specifically for the chemical profile of the 2K Polyurethane (PU) paints used.
Quantifiable Results
Production Capacity: Throughput increased by 65%, successfully meeting the 40-second per jig cycle time requirement.
Floor Space: The U-shaped layout saved 30% of the factory footprint compared to a conventional straight-line design.
Environmental Compliance: VOC emissions were reduced by 98%, fully complying with both local Mexican and US EPA standards.
